Members of the public are being warned to stay vigilant after reports of a highly poisonous plant being washed ashore on an Isle of Wight beach.
The plant, Hemlock Water Dropwort, also known as Dead Man’s Fingers, is extremely toxic to both humans and animals. Even a small amount can be fatal, attacking the nervous system and leading to serious illness or death.
The plant’s root is particularly dangerous, as it closely resembles and smells like a parsnip.
Authorities believe recent stormy weather has contributed to the plant being washed up along the coastline, with reports received of the plant being found on the beach at Bembridge.
Beachgoers are being urged to exercise caution, particularly those visiting with children or pets, and to avoid any contact with suspicious plants.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
