UPDATED: Motorists looking to top up their tanks are finding it increasingly difficult this week due to a shortage of unleaded fuel.
Tesco in Ryde and Morrisons in Lake – arguably 2 of the Island’s busiest petrol stations – both had to close their unleaded pumps to customers yesterday when supplies ran dry. Morrisons in Lake are said to be down to just 2 pumps today, whilst Tesco remains dry.
It is thought the ongoing shortage is as a result of a delayed delivery of fuel to Isle of Wight Fuels in East Cowes, compacted by the increased demand over the Festival period. The company say that their delivery ship has been delayed and will arrive on the Isle of Wight later this week.
Drivers shouldn’t panic too much though… a delivery of fuel is expected to arrive on the Island via tanker later on today (Tuesday) – this should be enough to refill the Island’s supermarkets to ensure a continuation of supply tomorrow.
ASDA in Newport have also run out of unleaded fuel this morning, but they are understood to be supplied by a mainland company direct. The supermarket is unclear as to when the next delivery will arrive.
UPDATE @ 12:10 – Sainsbury’s in Newport are also reported to have run out of unleaded fuel this morning.
Meanwhile diesel supplies are also starting to run short at Morrisons in Newport and Lake.
