The Eurosceptic right-wing populist political party UKIP are investigating the theft of two banners from a private property in Fishbourne over the weekend.
Sometime on Saturday night, two 15ft by 3ft banners were stolen from the Fishbourne Beach area overlooking the sea, in view of the Wightlink ferry.
The matter has been reported to Hampshire Isle of Wight Police and the Electoral Commission.
Rose Lynden-Bell, Chairman of UKIP Isle of Wight Branch, has released this statement in connection with this act of political vandalism:
“I am appalled by the theft of the two “VOTE UKIP” banners from Fishbourne Beach at the weekend, firstly because the act showed no respect for property rights, and secondly, because it suggests that a wave of political suppression is active within society. UKIP are a party of free speech, and I am fearful of the motives that lie behind actions that seek to deny that freedom; and I do not care to consider the natural conclusion if these actions are not challenged. UKIP Isle of Wight branch consider this a criminal act and will pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels.”
