In the world of online gambling, the thrill of placing a bet and the anticipation of a win can be exhilarating. However, it’s essential to remember that responsible gambling is paramount, and this is where affordability checks come into play.
Affordability checks are a relatively new concept introduced by the UK Gambling Commission to ensure that players can afford the money they are gambling with. This article will delve into what affordability checks are, how they work, and what they mean for you as an online gambler in the UK.
What Are Affordability Checks?
Affordability checks are a set of procedures that online gambling operators must carry out to ensure that their customers can afford to gamble the amount they are wagering. These checks are part of the UK Gambling Commission’s efforts to promote responsible gambling and protect players from potential financial harm.
In essence, affordability checks are designed to prevent players from gambling online with real money they can’t afford to lose. They are a way for gambling operators to ensure that they are not facilitating problem gambling and that their services are being used responsibly.
UK Gambling Affordability Checks, Explained
As proposed by the UK government, affordability checks are triggered by two thresholds. The first is a “moderate loss threshold” at either £125 net loss in a rolling month period or £500 net loss within a rolling year period. At this point, open source indicators of financial vulnerability such as county court judgements, average postcode affluence, and bankruptcies are checked.
The second threshold is triggered by what the white paper describes as “binge gambling”, a net £1,000 loss in a 24-hour period, which will entail an enhanced spending check. The expectation is that the majority of checks will involve credit reference agencies and will “not interrupt the customer journey unless the check raises concerns”.
However, the white paper notes that “information may need to be collected directly from the customer” when frictionless checks fail to provide enough information.
The Gambling Commission also considers a proposed £2,000 net loss threshold within a 90-day period that would trigger the same checks as a £1,000 net loss in a 24-hour period.
The government expects that credit reference agencies can carry out all those financial vulnerability assessments in a “frictionless” manner and will also be able to handle the enhanced checks in 80% of cases.
For the remaining 20% of cases where enhanced checks are required, half can be dealt with by what the white paper calls “semi-agreeable checks” (open banking is cited as an example) and the other half by “disagreeable checks”, such as requests for payslips or bank statements.
The Importance of Affordability Checks
Affordability checks are crucial for several reasons. Firstly, they help protect players from the potential negative impacts of gambling. By ensuring that players can afford to lose the money they are gambling with, operators can help prevent financial difficulties and potential problem gambling.
Secondly, affordability checks are part of the operators’ social responsibility. All participants in the gambling industry have a duty to create a safe environment for players, and affordability checks are a key part of this.
Finally, affordability checks can also help operators identify potentially fraudulent customer behaviour. For example, if a player is spending significantly more than their income would suggest, it could indicate that they are using gambling to launder money.
Affordability Checks and Player Protection
By design, affordability checks are there to protect you. They ensure that you can enjoy gambling without risking financial hardship. However, they do mean that you may be asked to provide certain financial information when signing up for a gambling site or making significant deposits.
While this might seem intrusive, it’s important to remember that this information is used to protect you and ensure that you are gambling responsibly. Furthermore, all information you provide is treated with strict confidentiality and used solely for the purpose of the affordability check.
Tips for Responsible Gambling
While affordability checks are an important tool for promoting responsible gambling, there are also steps you can take yourself to gamble responsibly. Here are a few tips:
- Set a budget: Before you start gambling, decide how much money you are willing to lose. This should be an amount that you can afford to lose without it impacting your financial wellbeing.
- Keep track of your spending: Make sure you keep a record of how much you are spending on gambling. This can help you stay within your budget and identify if you are starting to spend more than you can afford.
- Take regular breaks: Gambling continuously for long periods can make it harder to keep track of your spending and make informed decisions. Make sure you take regular breaks.
- Don’t chase losses: If you lose money gambling, don’t try to win it back by gambling more. This can lead to a cycle of losses and can make it harder to stop gambling.
- Use tools to manage your gambling: Most online gambling sites offer tools to help you manage your gambling. This can include setting deposit limits, taking a time-out, or self-excluding from gambling.
Affordability checks are an essential part of responsible gambling in the UK. They help protect players from the potential negative impacts of gambling and ensure that the thrill of placing a bet doesn’t turn into a financial nightmare.
As a player, it’s important to understand what affordability checks are and how they work. Remember, these checks are there to protect you and ensure that you can enjoy gambling responsibly but they cannot solve all of your problems if you’re not willing to protect yourself.
