The Salterns at Island Harbour – formerly known as The Breeze – has closed its doors just weeks after a big re-opening owing to failed negotiations with the property owners.
It was in November 2022 that the once-popular Breeze restaurant announced its unexpected and immediate closure, in order to evaluate the venue’s long-term viability.
The news came just 3 months after Island Echo highlighted the restaurant’s poor cleanliness and shocking food hygiene rating.
The site remained empty until June of this year when Andrew Watts and Janice Crump took over the River Medina eatery.
However, just weeks into their tenure, a notice has appeared on the front door stating:
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, The Salterns will be temporarily closed until further notice. Apologies for any inconvenience caused”.
Staff expecting to turn up for work yesterday (Sunday) were informed just hours beforehand that they no longer had a job.
Those with tables and functions booked, such as wakes, say they’ve been ill informed of the situation.
In an explanation to loyal staff members, Andy and Jan have stated that ‘continuous’ discussions have been taking place with the property owners to find an agreement that would allow the business to continue, but an agreement has not been reached.
The couple say that with no viable alternative, they have been left with no choice but to close the doors.
Staff’s final wages will be processed and paid by the end of the week.
On paper, the restaurant should be a goldmine with 170 covers, a heated veranda and views across the River Medina – with both vehicular and boat access. But Island Harbour has had a chequered history in recent years.
Island Echo is told that the marina’s lock gates broke down again at the weekend.
I have to admit I did think it may of taken slightly longer than this but no one expected it to last.
Shame that Andy and Jan had issues with island harbour owners over the running of the salterns.
I’m guessing the quick slap of paint and rat bait can’t cover up for long, they need to get professionals in to sort this run down marina and restaurant brought up to a good standard then sell it on to a buisness that knows what they are doing. Even trying to sell shares on the spicebus how low can these guys go.
Yes lock gates were broke again with people told they can’t get in or out. shut the marina until you no how to run it.
Epic fail.
