Loco convenience store in Totland has been issued with the lowest possible food hygiene rating by the Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health service.
Numerous problems have been identified by the Council’s inspectors including meat on display past it’s use-by date, raw and ready-to-eat items stored together, insufficient monitoring of refrigerator temperatures, poor general standard of hygiene and inappropriate storage of waste.
When inspectors visited on 8th March, they found that stock rotation and control was poor with ready-to-eat chicken sausages and cooked breaded ham found to be 4 days past their use-by date. Raw chicken thighs, Quiche Lorraine, soup, cooked sliced pepperoni, turkey ham and Country Life spread were also found to be out of date.
In addition, it was found that the monitoring of refrigerator temperatures was insufficient, giving rise to conditions that would encourage the growth of food spoilage bacteria, moulds and food poisoning bacteria, according to an official report.
Furthermore, the inspectors found that there was a mix of raw and ready-to-eat high risk items stored next and above to each other which may lead to contamination of the outer packaging of ready-to-eat foods with food poisoning bacteria.
They also found no evidence of food hygiene training for staff including that they were unable to correctly demonstrate the use of an infrared thermometer.
Other problems identified were that the floor of the shop was dirty in most areas. Refuse was also being stored in black bags located in the side passage next to the building which were not adequately protected against pests and created a messy environment which could affect efficient pest checks from being carried out.
A spokesperson from the shop says they have recognised mistakes were made, but following the visit from the Isle of Wight Council, have rectified the problems and “done everything” the officers had asked.
They’ve said an officer visited 2 weeks after the initial inspection and had seen the changes.
Inspectors are due to revisit again later this month.

Get down there quick. I bet there’s a sale on when this news spreads!
I’d nip out there but the old mobility scooter don’t like long runs in the wet, unless I could charge her at The Broadway Inn
The Broadway inn is now a post office and a closed up gift shop
Bugger! Might have to be the Horse & Groom then, although I was banned for cheating at shove ha’penny back in the 70’s
Should be shut down,
It’s handy for other things… Just not fresh food.
Salmonella sarnies ?
Close it, they obviously don’t give a !@#× about their customers safety!
Sounds like a right dump.
Never understand why if something is dirty they don’t clean it ????.(shouldn’t be allowed to get dirty in the first place )
What has happened to good hygiene????
Surely commonsense should prevail ???
Should be shut down zero hygiene standards….
Close it now ….

Vote with your feet and wallet…
What with the Indian Restaurant in Sandown and the Hotel in Sandown that was dishing up
out of date Tuna, now the Corner shop in Totland.
Where not to go.
If it is that bad it should be closed down as it is a public health risk.
Nobody who lives here is surprised by this.
shut it down for good or better still don’t go in there at all bloody scum bags
Culturally enriching scumbags il have know.
Who runs this establishment? Why are they not named & shamed?
They’ve been as good as named now. Be nuts to.shop on a dump like that.
Should be closed immediately, for safety of all who don’t know how bad it is!
I don’t condone selling out of date products, but hasn’t it been raised lately about doing away with sell by dates?
I’ve bought perfectly good meat from there that has been clearly marked as just out of date, along with a great reduction in price. This is nothing more than County Hall going over the top. I can choose if I buy foot just out of date, no-one is forcing me and in the last few years I’ve saved a fortune on food by buying some things this way. Another complete waste of tax payers cash. Fact.
