A thunderstorm that passed across the Isle of Wight throughout yesterday evening and into the early hours of this morning (Sunday) brought not only amazement, but destruction too.
At around 18:00 the claps of thunder and flashes of lightning began to surround the Island as a storm moved up through the English Channel from the South. It wasn’t long before the skies were a colour of dark grey and dogs were cowering behind furniture.
At just gone 19:30 the first weather-related incident of the night came in when HM Coastguard and Cowes RNLI were alerted to a trimaran that had been blown clean off the dockside at Venture Quays, East Cowes.
Just 2 hours later, as the lightning continued to strike across all parts of the Island, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to a house fire in Egerton Road, Bembridge. The property was struck by lightning resulting in the roof catching light.
Thank you to all Island Echo readers who have shared this photos of last night’s thunderstorm…
Also thanks to Colin Schooling for this video of the scene over Newport.
