The Great South Run, which was due to take place on 18th October, has been cancelled for 2020.
Organisers say they haven’t taken this decision lightly. Over the past few months, those behind the annual event have worked hard – and in close consultation with medical teams, local authorities and key partners – to try and find a way to run the Great South Run which both observes social distancing rules, and, crucially, doesn’t impact on the NHS.
As things stand – and even as the situation improves – organisers say it isn’t going to be possible to meet their goals with any certainty, and so, with just over 2 months to go, they’ve pulled the plug.
A spokesperson has said:
“We know how disappointing this is, but we’re sure everyone will understand why this decision has been made.
“All entrants will have the option to roll their entry over to the next Great South Run (scheduled to take place on 17th October 2021) or claim a refund of their entry fee, and will shortly receive an email confirming the next steps.
“We hope everybody stays fit and positive and we hope to see you on a Great Run start line in 2021. Thank you for your patience and continued support at this challenging time”.

Hardly critical. One can run for fun in the sun. Don’t need a crowed of spectators, or do YOU
I think you will find that the charities that benefit from all the runners getting sponsorship will see it as critical, especially at this time when so many charity based events have been cancelled.
Its a great event – yes we can run in the sun but events like this raise thousands for charity and a welcome boost to the local economy
