The boss of a local taxi firm has appeared in court charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a crash between a taxi and a rapid response ambulance in September last year.
72-year-old Roger Coombes, of Fairlee Road in Newport, entered no plea to the single charge when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier today (Friday).
Brief details of the case were outlined by the Crown Prosecution Service’s Lauren Stone. She told the bench that it was on 3rd September 2023 that emergency services responded to a head-on collision between a Ford Transit taxi and a Skoda rapid response vehicle belonging to the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service on Fairlee Road.
The paramedic at the wheel of the car, Hannah Harrison, sustained serious injuries including a fractured arm.
Magistrates adjourned the case to be sent up to the Isle of Wight Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 23rd September.
