Glorious weather welcomed thousands of fundraisers yesterday (Sunday) as they took part in the 35th anniversary of Walk the Wight in support of Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
Outgoing Mountbatten CEO Nigel Hartley, who was handed the President’s Award at the IW Chamber Business Awards last week, addressed the walkers at the Bembridge start point.
Walkers had the option of completing 1 of several walking routes; the full walk, half-distance, the flat walk and the schools walk. Some did Walk the Wight their own way – on treadmills or over shorter distances, allowing them to challenge themselves at their own pace.
One such walker was Nadine Martin – and her dog – who completed the walk in Berlin.
Having set off at just after 06:00, Freshwater man George Saunders – who raised more than £5,000 for Abby’s Heroes – was the first over the finish line at The Needles not long after 10:00.
Spectators cheered walkers on at various beauty spots along the route including at Brading Down, Carisbrooke Castle, Tennyson Down and Alum Bay.
