A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with the first weekend of the Summer holidays set to be a wet and windy one.
Forecasters at IW Met Service say that yet another spell of unseasonably strong Southwesterly winds is expected to develop across the Island through Saturday afternoon and into the evening, then overnight into Sunday morning.
The wind strength will be somewhat lower than the 79mph experienced at The Needles last weekend, but forecasters say they are still expecting some significantly windy conditions at times. Gusts of up to 45mph can be expected, although perhaps as high as 50-55mph around some of the more exposed coastal areas, as well as over high ground.
It won’t just be the wind ruining the weekend… some heavy rain is also likely to accompany the strongest winds on Saturday with 15-20mm worth falling through the afternoon and evening.
Islanders are warned that large waves will lead to hazardous conditions for small watercraft around southern and western coasts, with leaves and other debris causing problems on the roads too.
Disruption to outdoor events, especially where there are temporary structures such as tents, gazebos, market stalls etc., is to also be expected. There have already been cancellations with Festival of Heroes and Pier2Pier Swim called off.
Jamie Russell, Cheif Forecaster for IW Met Service, says:
“Any outdoor events should be carefully assessed, especially those taking place in more exposed locations, and any loose temporary structures should be taken down or at the very least have extra measures taken for added stability and security. Loose garden furniture should also be secured.
“We have upgraded the advisory to a regional warning affecting western and southern coasts and hills”.
The warning is in force from 13:00 on Saturday through to 03:00 on Sunday morning.
