Police are investigating reports that a child was approached by 2 people in the Gunville area of Newport yesterday (Thursday) with attempts made to entice the school child to get into their vehicle by offeringthem sweets.
It’s said that the incident occurred near the commercial units on Taylor Road as the child was walking home from school at around 17:30.
Parents have been made aware of the situation, with worrying news that the male and female had the intention of trying to get the child into their van.
No specific description of the van has been made available.
Staff at local schools are reminding children to head straight home from school today and to not speak to anyone they do not know.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson has said:
“We received a report at 17:42 yesterday (23rd March) of a suspicious incident in Newport.
“Police were told that between 15:55 and 16:00 yesterday a boy was offered sweets and asked to get in a vehicle by a person he did not know.
“The local Neighbourhood Team have been made aware. Officers will be visiting the nearby Carisbrooke College and making enquiries in the area.
“We continue to encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to report this to police on 101. Dial 999 if a crime is in progress or someone is in danger”
