Freshwater Independent Lifeboat launched both its lifeboats in a bid to rescue a swimmer in difficulty off the coast of Brighstone this evening (Sunday).
The volunteer lifeboat crew were paged by Solent Coastguard at just after 20:00 and soon launched both inshore lifeboats to make the journey down the coast towards Grange Chine.
On land, officers from Needles Coastguard Rescue Team offered their assistance from the beach.
Thankfully, the casualty was able to make it safely ashore of his own accord.
He did not need any medical attention, but Coastguard Rescue Officers checked on his welfare.

All’s well that ends well. Nice one
Thank goodness for our volunteer rescue crews who give up their time and often risk their own lives in order to save others. They are busier than ever before and think more could be done to educate the public and make them more aware of the possible dangers.. So many incidents at sea and along our coastlines could be avoided as a result. General safety and technology arguably have improved but common sense, risk assessment and education needs work?
You can’t eduate pork! Most of the public are pork, that’s why the mainstream media know how to influence them when it comes to elections…..And that’s why we are a basket case of a country…….Vote none of the above….
Glad this rescue was a success…
What a load of hogwash.
A bunch of excitable dfl’s reported that I was out there (actually they reported the seal as a 2nd swimmer).
Fact – I wasn’t ‘in distress ‘ and certainly wasn’t ‘rescued ‘.
Your reporter was close enough to get the picture, they should have been able to report the facts.
Shoddy journalism.
Also facts –
1) I had a fluorescent swim buoy and my highly buoyant triathlon swimming wetsuit on.
2) I swam back to shore unaided & was absolutely fine.(I’ve completed two full Ironman triathlons and 20 half iron races – swimming 500m isn’t an issue).
I have the lifeguards number and will let them know in future.
I did of course thank the guys.
What on earth made them think you were in trouble ? Looking at the pic it is obvious you can handle yourself and not someone to be waving hands in the air whilst trying to keep afloat. You must have wondered what the hell was happening lol
We are so lucky to have these people giving up their time to do this. You are all amazing, it really is appreciated.
