South Wight Area Youth (SWAY) has been honoured with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service, presented by HM Lord-Lieutenant Susie Sheldon during a special event on last month (Thursday 25th September).
More than 50 people gathered to witness the presentation at the charity’s newly built Community Hub, including volunteers and supporters who have contributed to SWAY’s development over the past decade.
Mary Case, Deputy Lieutenant, read the official citation before the Lord-Lieutenant praised the organisation’s lasting impact on rural communities in the south of the Isle of Wight.
Susie Sheldon, HM Lord-Lieutenant, has said:
“South Wight Area Youth has been an extraordinary success story: an Island charity and a brilliant example of how a determined and committed group of volunteers can bring immeasurable benefit and hope to a rural community.
“They have been highly effective in their first decade, and will provide further opportunities and adventures far into the future.”
The event also marked the official opening of SWAY’s long-anticipated Community Hub. The new facility, described as elegant and welcoming, includes a café serving snacks and drinks, along with a much-needed top-up shop.
SWAY hopes the Hub will become a vital space for local groups to meet, organisations to deliver services, and a focal point for community life in South Wight. Youth work is already taking place regularly in the village, with further activities planned as the Hub becomes more established.
Over 100 people attended the opening, enjoying afternoon tea and cake while exploring the building and sharing ideas for future events and activities.
