Fire crews from Newport and Freshwater responded to a dishwasher fire at a property in Totland this morning (Saturday).
A working smoke alarm within the residential dwelling alerted the occupiers to the developing fire, which led to 2 appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service being mobilised at around 10:20.
Once on scene, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and equipped with hose reel jets were committed into the building to extinguish the fire and stop it from spreading. Black smoke was issuing.
Thankfully, nobody was injured in the incident and the damage was contained to a single corner of the kitchen.
Positive pressure ventilation was used to rid smoke from the property before the dishwasher was safely removed.
A spokesperson on behalf of Freshwater’s retained crew has said:
“A good reminder to check your smoke alarms are working. In this case much worse damage was prevented by the early detection of smoke thereby allowing valuable time for the crews to arrive on scene and deal with the incident”.

What a good job they were home.
Many people go out and leave their dishwashers, washing machines or tumble dryers on.
This is a good example of why you shouldn’t, it could have been much worse.
Well done fire brigade, glad all involved are ok.
