A 12ft wide void discovered under the road on Quay Street in Newport has prompted an emergency call out for Island Roads this evening (Sunday).
Concerned members of the public alerted the highways contractor to a sinkhole developing when they noticed a circular hole in the tarmac measuring around 1-2ft in diameter.
Closer inspection of the situation has revealed a massive void measuring at least 12ft by 5ft.
It is located outside a number of residential properties just a stone’s throw from the courts.
The cause is unclear at this moment in time but a sewer pipe is known to run close to where the void appears to be at its largest.
A full road closure is expected to be implemented due to safety concerns. In the meantime, the immediate area is being fenced off.
Due to an odour in the air, SGN engineers are on scene conducting investigations to ensure no gas pipes have been compromised.
Further investigations by Island Roads are expected to take place tomorrow to ascertain the scale of the incident and a probable cause.

Sure was a problem here a little will back with road needing urgent works and closed?.
I bet the council have something to do with it.
They will need a bigger hole than that if they’re going to link you to the mainland…
Likely just an old Cellar or something running out under the highway.
A few gabion cages placed inside and filled with rocks would secure the road, making it safer should anyone drive over it or fall into it due to being nosey.
The gabion cages could easily be lifted free when a permanent repair is effected.
Cheap, easy to move and resuable.
So the Council and I.R wont be using such
You don’t half talk some twaddle, gabion cages are completely inappropriate for this scenario
Island Roads to the rescue with their special flour and water mix, used all over the island for pot hole repairs .. that’s the road shut for 8 weeks now .. whilst they carry out the first class repairs .. 12 engineers leaning on brooms looking down the hole and one making the tea
Probably 10 weeks, then they will need to extend that!
I suspect the odour in the air is the smell of the circulating hoi polloi inhabiting that area, a unique musty sweat and cannabis infused aroma combined with essence of oily maccy d.
Derr!! Sewer pipe close unpleasant smell …. Let’s think about it … oh yeah pipe burst washed away ground under tarmac and hole appears and there’s a foul smell think I may know cause of void being made under road
Will be closed for months with island roads and the council sorting it if wroxall is anything to go by
Island Roads are investigating? Oh dear. Standby for things to get a bunch worse.
Probably a ‘Standard Fix’…
slap a both of tarmac over the hole are forget bout it!
Just HOW many times has a hole (void) opened up in Hope Road, Shanklin, and that is all that Island Roads (or whoever they choose to ‘blame’) allegedly ‘sorted’,this sort of problem?!
Don’t worry, the council will fill it in with wads of our cash. They’re used to filling bottomless pits that way…..
I’ve noticed that depressions in road surfaces tend to get filled with tarmac until the weight on the void becomes so great the surface collapses. Far more sense to excavate the depression as soon as it occurs.
Start of an escape tunnel just by the law Court!
Steve McQueen was seen climbing out doing a remake of the Great Escape. Island police say they are looking into it!
A shit hole the all island is.
Talk about overreacting, lol. You know where the ferry is if you don’t like it, goodbye, you won’t be missed.
Stick hole me thinks
Yep that’s the road closed for 6 months ..
Hopefully swallows the rest of the island!!
For a while, I peered impotently, trying to see through the reek. At first, it was impossible to make out anything. Then, as I stared, I saw something below, to my left, that moved. I looked intently toward it, and, presently, made out another, and then another—three dim shapes that appeared to be climbing up the side of the Pit. I could see them only indistinctly. Even as I stared and wondered, I heard a rattle of stones, somewhere to my right. I glanced across; but could see nothing. I leant forward, and peered over, and down into the Pit, just beneath where I stood; and saw no further than a hideous, white swine-face, that had risen to within a couple of yards of my feet. Below it, I could make out several others. As the Thing saw me, ..
Well at least they have got guys looking into it.
After work tomorrow I’m going to see how much Island roads have worked on this hole, most probably will take them a month to sort this out lol .
