A shed ablaze has closed the main road through Merstone this afternoon (Friday).
The incident occurred at around 13:00 and has seen a shed to the rear of a property catch fire. The fire also spread to a portion of the adjacent property.
It is unclear as to the severity of the damage caused.
Fire appliances from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin and Sandown are on scene on Merstone Lane in the heart of the village.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary have also been mobilised to the scene.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have used hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.
As a result of the emergency service presence on the narrow road, Police have closed Merstone Lane at both it’s junctions due to the road being blocked.
Southern Vectis buses are on diversion.
UPDATE @ 14:15 – The fire has been extinguished. Firefighters are currently conducting checks at the scene

Bloody sheds at it again, about time we just banned them!
I agree. Sheds should be sent to Singapore and hanged.
Hanging’s too good for sheds!!!!!
Three massive appliances.
Perhaps IF the Police were only paid for each shout for help, then we too would see a massive presence turn up for crime, instead of not bothering at all.
Looks like there was 4 even bigger shed
Maybe the fire Service are tacking a leaf out of Island Roads books
Send in as many personnel as possible to watch the others do the work.
Dodgy area that for moonshine, every time I drive through there I feel pissed….
Three fire engines. That was some shed.
Actually four fire engines it’s all done so Fire Union can demand more firefighters….just watch each report how many appliances are involved totally overkill.
I best check my shed me reckons, I puts the old mobility scooter in there during the winter, don’t want her going up in flames, it’ll cost me a fortune in taxi fares to get to the pub everyday if I loses the old girl!
a good job there was not a pig in a poke not enough engines for that
Maybe they are filming a new series of London’s Burning on the Island.
