Shanklin illuminated carnival has been cancelled this evening (Saturday) as a result of the adverse weather currently being experienced on the Island.
The seaside town’s carnival committee were forced to cancel the main procession on Wednesday last week, stating that safety came first. Organisers had hoped that the weather would clear by this weekend, but heavy wind and rain have set in and the adverse weather doesn’t look like shifting anytime soon.
As previously reported by Island Echo, local weather forecaster IW Met Service issued a yellow weather warning for wind and rain earlier this week. Earlier today, The Chale Show announced that today – the first day of the popular family event – the event was cancelled.
All road closures that were set to be in place this evening are to be lifted, with Southern Vectis confirming that their Route 3 buses will follow their usual route.
It is yet another blow for the carnival community following the cancellation of Newport Carnival last month. So far this year 4 of the 4 scheduled carnivals (to date) have been pulled, with a break in the bad weather allowing Sandown Carnival to successfully go ahead last Saturday.
It is hoped that Ventnor Carnival will go ahead next week, with the weather looking more favourable.
A Shanklin Carnival spokesperson has said:
“The safety of those in the carnival and the public are of paramount importance and it is this and advice that we have taken into account in making our decision.
“Although forecasts show there maybe some improvement in the weather later today, we not only need to be confident that the conditions are acceptable for the event itself, which is not guaranteed, but also for those travelling to the carnival, not least the other carnival floats and other participants travelling across the island and forming the procession in advance of the Carnival.
“We hope you understand our reasons for taking this decision.

Oh no me and a bunch of old farts was going to get are peckers out
You very strange person
Well you know what I’m not saying
Who wants to see a load of retards walking down the road in there bell end costumes. And it noise pollution. Should be banned..
A sad time for all those who do bother to try to make a nice event for the enjoyment of others, but thanks for trying all.
If it was pride it would be rearranged. Island roads are sexist and discriminative
Hardly Notting Hill, but then we don’t have the robbery of homes when people are wathcing the event, the sexual assaults, knife crime, gun crime, acid attacks, blatant drug taking and dealing, prostitution and violence.
No wonder attendance is dwindling.
Who watches this rubbish, let alone participates?
