AIR AMBULANCE CALLED TO SERIOUS CRASH AT APSE HEATH

UPDATED: A road traffic collision involving 2 vehicles has resulted in the closure of the main Sandown to Newport road at Apse Heath this lunchtime (Wednesday).

2 fire appliances, multiple ambulances and Police are on scene between Sandown Airport and Apse Heath roundabout having been called at just gone 11:30.

1 male is trapped inside a small white van and fire crews from Shanklin and Ryde are working to cut him free.

Another person, believed to be the driver of a Toyota Aygo, has been also been injured.

An Air Ambulance has been scrambled and is expected to land at Sandown Airport shortly.

Motorists should divert via Whitely Bank or Brading Downs until further notice.

UPDATE @ 12:24 – An ambulance has now left the scene and is rushing 1 of the casulties to St Mary’s Hospital.

Emergency teams are still working to extricate the driver of the small van.

UPDATE @ 12:46 – The trapped male has now been freed from the wreckage of his vehicle. He is thought to have sustained a serious leg injury.

Thames Valley Air Ambulance has landed in a field near to the scene of the crash with Onboard paramedics and doctors are assessing the injuries sustained.

UPDATE @ 13:02 – The decision has been taken to convey the casualty to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance. He is being rushed through with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The air ambulance crew are standing down.

Sandown Road is expected to remain closed for sometime whist investigations are carried out and recovery of both vehicles is arranged.U

UPDATE @ 15:08 – The road has now re-opened in both directions following recovery of the vehicles by Stag Lane Motors.

1 male and 1 female are being treated at St Mary’s Hospital this afternoon.
