The Isle of Wight’s MP has taken further steps to tackle ongoing anti-social behaviour in Freshwater by writing to magistrates and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to ask them to support the Police in their efforts.
As previously reported by Island Echo, residents in Freshwater have been battling against severe anti-social behaviour by a group of youths. This led to over 100 people attending a public meeting earlier this year.
Since the start of the year, Bob Seely MP has been working with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones to see what powers they have to tackle the issue.
In February, a 14-year-old boy was sentenced to a 8-month Youth Offender Order and told to pay £221 compensation for his part in the anti-social behaviour.
Speaking this week, Mr Seely has said:
“I have spoken several times with the Police and Crime Commissioner, and she has agreed to use some of her violent reduction budget to pay for community outreach and mediation.
“I have also spoken to the Youth Offending Team and held several meetings with beat officers and senior police officers to see what can be done to help the situation. They are doing all they can, but they need the court system to support them and that seems to be where the current sticking point is.
“I have therefore written to the CPS and the Bench Chair for the Isle of Wight to see what more can be done to prevent further criminal damage incidents via the criminal justice system.”

In his letter to the Chief Crown Prosecutor, Mr Seely said:
“Whilst I know that action out of the court system is important in supporting and changing the behaviour of these individuals, I believe that criminal justice is needed to reassure residents and prevent this anti-social behaviour in the immediate term.”
“I understand and respect the independence of the judiciary, which is important to our system of governance and is highly valued. However, I have concerns that magistrates are not sufficiently supporting police … I fear the impact is that some of the offenders are capitalising on this lack of enforcement in a way which damages community cohesion and scares residents.
“I would urge the CPS to support the police wherever possible in securing Criminal Behaviour Orders against the known offenders in court and protecting local residents.”
Addressing Islanders, Mr Seely has said:
“I don’t want Islanders to be alarmed, we are talking about low-level crime by a small number of teenagers – not serious crime by adult gangs – but nevertheless anti-social behaviour can be extremely disruptive to residents and businesses, and we all need to work together to address it.”
About time too these brats have been allowed to run amock for too long. It’s about time their parents take some responsibility especially that bimbo with all those kids in Solent Gardens
Whenever I see 2 or more kids together I call the police. It scares me. We can’t allow this to go on.
The PROBLEM is people ARE paid too much to have children.
Hence many are born for the ‘lifestyle’ of laziness and yet still gain a free home and c.tax, along with a better income than IF they were working.
So unloved, not really ‘wanted’ children are born, who grow up with issues.
STOP PAYING so much in tax credits and free rent .c tax, extra funding for food, heating, school meals, etc THEN and ONLY then would less unwanted children be born and less imm’s arriving here to add to our woes.

What Mr Seeley has missed is that the local Magistrates follow the guidance as laid down by the Sentencing Guidance Council. So if Mr Seeley doesn’t like the result then he, as part of the Government needs to change the guidance.
Of course nobody would suggest that he would announce this to the press just to get his picture in the press and appear to be hard on crime – even if he is attempting to hit the wrong target.

I have never ‘slapped’ either of my kids and they do not go around being anti social. Children need discipline and rules but this does not mean violence. Stop living in the dark ages! Start looking at the motivation for some ‘parents’ to have children in the first place.

Drivel – this is the kind of dross that san francisco put in place and look at the mess they are in, whereas back in the UK, Cumbria reduced anti social behaviour by nearly 50% simply by putting one police officer back on the beat – this was published in national news as well.
bring back some of the less lethal punishments. I’m not talking about stoning or hanging but the good old stocks.
The perpetrators and their parents would be subject to a good covering of bad eggs and fruit, please no safety goggles. Then paraded around with their names on a board around their necks. If you think about it, the the only thing that prevents something is fear. Bet you don’t post this.
You are unsuited to life in the civilized world. Perhaps you should consider moving to Saudi Arabia where such barbarism is still considered acceptable.

So says one CON Servative MP. Until the time comes when they need to re-write the law (Covid Pandemic) and then these same laws can be manipulated accordingly.

Seely should be arrested for antisocial behaviour as a Tory MP attempting to deprive and impoverish his constituents from their hard earned money and essential services.
It’s not just youngsters. A friend has antisocial neighbours in their 30’s. Domestic violence, loud music, theft, drugs use. They engage in all of it with minors in the house. The police turn up arrest one, following day their back. The bloke has actually said he doesn’t give a fig about the police. The system is broken and will remain broken until people speak up. No one wants the hassle.
I think that if these youths were suddenly named and their home address were printed on lots and lots of A4 laminated sheets and pinned up all over the place on telephone poles and fences etc.
Then when they and their so called parent start to realise that the entire village knows who they are and where THEY live, their big man attitudes will be severely “dent”-ed.
Nothing will improve while there is no meaningful punishment.Discipline is non existent and the magistrates are just one big joke.
