A night of torrential rain and gusty winds has seen trees brought down, sea defences damaged and 2 flood alerts issued for the Isle of Wight.
Heavy downpours throughout yesterday evening and overnight into this morning (Thursday) led to the flooding of the Island’s roads, with locations such as Middle Road noted as being particularly bad. Nettlestone Hill in Pondwell was closed due to flooding, but has since re-opened.
In Sandown, a large tree fell across the carriageway at The Broadway partially blocking the road at around 03:00. Similar has happened on Bullen Road in Ryde, which is currently blocked in both directions whilst contractors work to clear the debris.
Ryde Seafront took a battering overnight with 1 tree ripped from its roots. Another tree at Western Gardens has also been damaged by the strong winds, loosing a complete limb.
Over in Cowes, sea defences have been damaged by the strong waves – as captured by Island Echo reader Terry White on his morning dog walk. Railings have been ripped out of the concrete along the promenade.
The Environment Agency has been forced to issue an alert for the St Johns area of Ryde overnight, where the water level in the Monktonmead Brook is high and rising. In the last 24 hours alone almost half a month’s worth of rain (45mm) has been recorded at Ryde.
The water level in the Eastern Yar also remains very high at Alverstone with a flood alert now in force for the Eastern Yar between Bembridge and Whitwell.
Flooding could be seen at Horringford, Alverstone and Langbridge and at Golf Links Road in Sandown. With this in mind, local residents are being urged to ensure that any pumps used to protect property can operate. Residents should also consider installing flood protection.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been kept busy with over 120 calls being dealt with by the control room across the region.
UPDATE @ 10:45 – Island Roads attended more than 20 call outs in a 12-hour period. This included flooded roads at Middle Road, Carisbrooke Road, Whippingham Road, Wyatts Lane, Blackwater Road and Briddlesford Road.
Blocked culverts, lifted manhole covers and fallen trees also made up the 22 incidents, as well as traffic lights being stuck on red.
and they still want to build on flood plains
and that is why the pennyfeathers cannot go ahead – if you look at that land, you will see how it slopes down wards from marlborough road- heavy rain is soaked up by those fields – if they build on that area, the whole place at the bottom will be underwater every time it rains heavily – that will be evident during any building – as the houses will be underwater before they even finish.
no point talking of drains as it needs to flow into an already overstretched system, which cant cope already.
It should come as no surprise that so many building projects being proposed on the island are being submitted by those that do not live here.
I’m so happy to see the work has started on The Ryde rejuvenation project. Go Wightlink!!!!!
The tree down wasn’t the start of Ryde Interchange Project, that will start with payning £5.4M to Ringway Island Roads in March 2022. Then we will not only loose trees and grass, but loose the seating as well and the cafe and toilets.
They say NEW seating, and NEW cafe plus NEW toilets.. hopefully where drunks and druggies are not able to hang out..
Are you crazy! Want to sit in a the void of bus station to have another Costa Coffee? Or go to take your kids into covered in sand off the beach to queue for the loo (possibly) in a train station? Or just pee against the sea wall – thats certainly an “unmanageable” future for our town.
Re development work and new buildings don’t help toward reducing climate change that we keep hearing about even more so when its not necessary work and when it takes out green fields.
