A King Charles spaniel which has become an internet phenomenon across the world has now achieved what must be the ultimate photographic opportunity: a chance to pose with crew members aboard Cowes RNLI’s inshore lifeboat.
Owner of four year old Bertie, Steve Powell, explained that while he and his wife ‘Beans’ were sailing their 62 foot yacht in the Mediterranean he began taking pictures of Bertie and putting them on the internet.
Steve recalled:
“At first it was just meant for friends and family.
“All of a sudden BuzzFeed and Instagram took it up and there were a lot of comments on Twitter.
“Then Bertie made the Good Morning America television programme, and the story has been gathering pace ever since, helped with more and more photos. When these are taken on our boat he is always wearing his yellow life-jacket. He even has his own fan club, now over 2,000 strong.
‘Beans’ said, “It’s all a bit of fun really, and Bertie has become quite a poser in front of the camera.”
Steve’s links with Cowes lifeboat started through his involvement in the RS Elite National Championships at the port two years ago which raised £2,251 for the station.
Steve continued:
“If through Bertie we can further help the RNLI it is all to the good,” added Steve, who is taking part in the RS Elite Class racing during this year’s Cowes Week.
