Sandown Town Council marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, in December, with the start of work on its’ changing places facility at Eastern Gardens, Sandown. Internal and external work planned for the facility is to start over the Winter, with a formal opening penned in for the Spring. Changing Places toilets are larger accessible toilets for severely disabled people, with equipment such as hoists, privacy screens, adult-sized changing benches, peninsula toilets and space for carers. Town Mayor Alex Lightfoot said:
“Working with Muscular Dystrophy UK, the Isle of Wight Council, and other partner agencies, this is a major accessibility project for the Town Council, part funded by the Department of Levelling Up and complements investment in accessible facilities at St John’s, the Broadway Centre, as well as at Eastern Gardens. “This is a major accessibility project for a small Town Council, and we also hope to secure funding for an accessible mat and beach wheelchairs, alongside an information project to be located near to Eastern Gardens.”
