A busy cut-through road connecting Havenstreet to Wootton has been closed by Island Roads due to concerns for the safety of motorists posed by an unsafe barn.
Firestone Copse Road, between Kite Hill and Firestone Glade, was shut over the weekend.
The barn that has sparked the closure has been in a precarious state of disrepair for some time, but the decision has now been taken that it poses too much of a risk to those passing by.
As such, it is being demolished.
Motorists that use the route as a back road out of Ryde will now have to divert via the main road through Binstead, or via Havenstreet. However, the road is expected to reopen in the next day or so as soon as demolition is complete.
Access to Firestone Glade, the camp site and the forest car park is from the Havenstreet end only.
Last weekend Island Echo reported that a tree had fallen on a moving vehicle on the same stretch of road, thought to be as a result of strong winds.

That’s interesting. Demolished on whose authority? I can think of several buildings that could usefully come down if it’s that easy.
Those along and in Sandown for a start..?
Now that arson was unsuccessful….. Who would have thought the owners could not find a decent arsonist on this respectable little Island eh? “irony by the way for the daytime vultures who suck the joy out of living!”
More interesting is the fact that the barn belongs to the Abrahams family, and used to be used as a farm shop many years ago.
Barry Abrahams is a CONservative councilor on our Island and represents Wooton Bridge. Funny that!
Over the top health n safety lol.know where near road! Yay for over zealous council yet again
Likely just a way to get planning for a detached house to get speed tracked through. Watch the space, but be quick as it will soon be filled, not for a while, but for ever more.
Better a detached house than a decaying eyesore.
Health and Safety does not exist on the Island.
Have you not seen the building on the right hand side of the Road when driving from
Brading towards Sandown.
“The window is hanging off”, anyone walking by could cop it.
Hence Health and Safety does not exist on the Island
Have you reported it to Island Roads to prevent some innocent person being injured? It’s very easy on their website.
