Fire crews have been called to Wootton this lunchtime (Saturday) where a tree has fallen onto the roof of a car whilst the occupants were inside.
The incident occurred at around 12:30 on Firestone Copse Road and has seen a large tree fall on a vehicle – a blue Peugeot – travelling towards Kite Hill.
A yellow weather warning is currently in place across the Island for strong winds. It is understood this is the reason behind the crash.
Fire crews from Ryde and Newport were mobilised to the scene alongside Police officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Firefighters have worked to free a casualty from the damaged vehicle, with the individual receiving treatment at the side of the road.
Island Roads operatives have also arrived at the scene to begin removing the tree, which is currently resting on top of the vehicle, its branches blocking the road.
The road is expected to be closed for some time, whilst the incident is cleared.
Traffic is unable to use the road between Havenstreet or Wootton.
UPDATE @ 15:30 – The vehicle and the tree have been cleared.
Traffic can once again use Firestone Copse Road.
