RETIRED TEACHER TO TACKLE BRITAIN’S TOUGHEST MOUNTAINS FOR ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH

A retired Isle of Wight teacher is preparing to take on one of Britain’s toughest mountain challenges this October half-term to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

David Moorse, who is in his mid-sixties, will attempt the gruelling Cuillin Round on the Isle of Skye – a remote 34-mile mountain route covering 59 summits and over 23,000ft of ascent. The challenge includes technical rock climbing, abseils, and long stretches of exposed ridge walking across some of the UK’s most dramatic terrain.

David plans to complete the round in 3 days and nights, carrying all his kit and sleeping out in the mountains along the way.

At the heart of the challenge is the Cuillin Ridge, widely regarded as the most demanding mountaineering route in the country. The ridge is known for its complex navigation, steep ascents and descents, and constant exposure – with many sections graded as Severe in traditional climbing terms.

David originally intended to undertake the challenge in June, when daylight hours on Skye can stretch to 18 hours. However, a serious knee injury just 2 weeks before the attempt forced him to postpone. Now, following 3 months of recovery and with just 12 hours of daylight each day in October, the odds are even steeper.

David Moorse has said:

David is fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK, highlighting the urgent need for more investment in dementia research. Dementia currently affects around 1 million people in the UK, but recent breakthroughs in early diagnosis and treatment are offering hope of a future without the disease.
