RED FLARE SIGHTING LEADS TO COASTAL SEARCH


The sighting of a red flare around the area of The Needles sparked a coastal search by Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and HM Coastguard last night (Saturday).

At just gone 21:00, both lifeboats from Freshwater were tasked to investigate the sighting of a red flare by 2 separate witnesses in the area of The Needles lighthouse and Scratchells Bay.

The Needlee Coastguard Rescue Team also joined the search for possible persons in distress.

Despite an extensive search nothing untoward was found.

That said, 2 groups of people were located on the isolated beach at Scratchells Bay by Freshwater’s D-class Lifeboat. They stated they did not see any flares.

Solent Coastguard stood down the search by 23:30.
