40-year-old Darren Prouten has been remanded in custody after being charged with numerous theft and driving offences.
On Monday evening, Police stopped a BMW on Pan Estate in Newport and allegedly found Prouten at the wheel of the vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.
After being taken into custody at Newport Police Station, Prouten was charged with the 2 offences as well as further counts of driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance in relation to an incident on Brading Road, Ryde on 21st February.
In addition, Prouten, of no fixed abode, was charged with theft from a motor vehicle in relation to a car waterproof cover that was stolen in Newport on 18th August last year, and 3 counts of shoplifting.
The shoplifting incidents are alleged to have taken place between 29th March 2022 and 23rd April 2022. £99.99 worth of goods were stolen from The Range in Cowes, an unknown quantity of items were stolen from B&Q in Newport, and £63 worth of goods were stolen from Sainsbury’s in Newport.
Prouten appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Tuesday) where he was remanded in custody to appear at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on 14th March.

Remanded to appear at Isle of Wight magistrates court. That will be another let off then…
Guess the slap on the wrist the first time was not enough… I blame the courts, far too lenient. Lets guess what he will get, Maybe 2 weeks prison, suspended for 2 years, 200 hours community work and an £85 fine…
Courts CAN’T give long term prison sentences EVER again.
Our prisons now house so very many third world newcomers as well as a growing number of our own that UNLESS any crime committed is even WORSE than theirs then a short or suspended sentences is ALL you can expect.
The criminals know it so they grow in number.
End the extra criminals arriving and we would have more room, more deterrent and thus less crime as we used to have pre such deciding to settle here.
What rubbish, most crime is done by our very own home grown UK individuals who are repeat offenders. Crime was increasing well before influx of migrants.
Well said, Freddie.
The first time? He’s been a menace most of his life, he’s stolen more cars than most of us have had hot dinners.
Just put this creature down!! Absolute drain on society and brings nothing but misery!!
I’m sure his mum would disagree.
I expect this cretins probably robbed his own mum before, so I disagree, she probably thinks he’s a waste of oxygen as well!! Just shoot the idiot, job done
Wonder what her Mothers day prezzie will be?
Perhaps a ton-up drive along the milly road, in someone else’s car?
That’s a but harsh, haven’t you been told that if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all
Where is a Wicker Man when you need one?
You lot over here are soft as.
He’s been stealing cars and anything else for donkeys years, and no one has had the backbone to ‘have a little chat’ if you know what I mean?
Called principles you buffoon. Two wrongs do not make a right. And “having a chat” would make you no better than a common criminal. Living a sad, miserable life despised by all is a punishment in itself for this cretin.
Principles really worked with him didn’t they.
Those that start vigilante groups would probably end up getting more punishment than this low life, but they are deterrents if not caught!
This is precisely the sort of character that should be dealt with by the community once and for all, especially since the authorities hands are tied before he kills someone.
if he has no fixed abode will probably look forward to going to prison as he will be looked after with food warmth activities and no worries
In the press lately if u can get away with stabbing with a chisel, beating someone to near death, this will be a slap on a wrist and a extended ban that means nothing,no justice or punishment these days
Magistrates Court. They are all a bunch of Muppets. He won’t get what he deserves, a stretch inside.
Just searched rules re Magistrate courts: Magistrates have sentencing powers that allow them to impose a range of sentences, including unlimited fines, bans, community orders and up to 12 months’ custody, depending on the offence. Probably costs us more in tax to have Magistrates than any benefits obtained looking at the above.
ahhhh darren haha chin up boi
