Members of the Probus Club of Yarmouth stepped back in time with a visit to the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum in Ryde at the end of May.
The outing came just 2 weeks after club members had enjoyed a talk from 2 volunteers from the museum at the club’s monthly meeting, which inspired many to learn more about the Island’s transport heritage.
During a guided tour, members were given access to the various vehicles on display and also had the opportunity to see restoration work currently being carried out in the museum’s workshop.
The visit concluded with a return trip to St Helens aboard a vintage 1967 bus, alongside other visitors enjoying the attraction that day.
The historic vehicles sparked plenty of memories and conversation, with members recalling childhood experiences of travelling on old ‘jump-on, jump-off’ buses. The cigarette ‘stubbers’ mounted on the backs of seats also served as a reminder of a very different era.
One member said:
“It seemed no consideration had been given to accessibility when designing some of those older vehicles. How on earth did a parent with a pram or a wheelchair user get on?”
“Well worth a visit.”
