A man and a woman have both been sentenced to over a year in prison for trying to smuggle drugs into HMP Isle of Wight.
39-year-old sex offender Adam Ward of HMP The Verne, and 50-year-old Nicola Hine, of Lampton Road in Hounslow, were sentenced at Reading Crown Court last Friday (26th May).
It comes after the pair pleaded guilty to conspiring to convey a list ‘A’ prohibited article into prison.
Between November 2019 and July 2020, Ward and Hine conspired to smuggle sheets of spice paper into HMP Isle of Wight where Ward was imprisoned at the time.
Ward was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison back in 2018 following a serious sexual assault at the tail end of 2017. He had previously served time for a drugs offence in 2015.
The court heard that Hine concealed the drug paper within post and fake legal documents, using the postal service to have them delivered into the prison which were intercepted.
Ward and Hine were charged on 10th August 2022 following an investigation by the South East Regional Crime Unit (SEROCU) Prison Intelligence Team.
At Friday’s sentencing hearing in Reading, Ward received a 1-year 8-month sentence, with Hine receiving a 1-year 4-month sentence respectively.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Robbie Scott, of SERPIT, said:
“This sentencing reflects the hard work and collaboration by the police and prison service.
“It highlights the serious nature of conveying drugs into prisons which have a damaging effect on good order as well as the safety of prisoners and staff.
“SERPIT will continue to pursue those offenders who choose to commit this type of criminality.”

Poor old inmate .Probably only wanted it to spice up his spag Bol or lasagna.Prison food can be very bland at times.
