29-year-old Jake Millmore has kept his licence, but has been slapped with 7 penalty points, after ‘panicking’ and speeding away from Police. It was on 1st June this year that Police saw a male – who they believed to be disqualified from driving – behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta exiting McDonalds in Ryde. Officers followed and activated their blue lights, at which point the driver sped off down Beaper Shute. No pursuit was enacted, but officers continued and soon located the crashed Fiesta with damage to its wheel. The occupant ran off into the woods but was not located. However, Millmore – who was banned from driving for 12 months in 2023 for an offence of drug driving – handed himself in to Police the next day. Millmore, of Spanners Close in Chale, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (20th August) charged with failing to stop after a road accident – which he pleaded guilty to at the first opportunity. Defending, Lucy Linington told the court that her client simply panicked when he saw the blue lights and that the crash was as a result of a ‘rapid turn’. Ms Linington described her client’s actions as ‘foolish’ and that he had made a ‘very bad choice’. The former groundworker, who was recently made redundant and is now seeking work again, was handed 7 penalty points on his licence and fined £500. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £200 surcharge.
