Police have told the owners of the Ocean Hotel in Sandown that they must clean up the site otherwise they will be breaking the law.
The South Wight Neighbourhood Policing Team previously issued a Community Protection Notice Warning in May, with certain actions that needed to be undertaken by last Friday (10th June).
Despite the notice, not a single action has been taken by Phoenix Commerical Property Development Limited, forcing the hand of the Police.
Hampshire Constabulary has now authorised the issue of a Community Protection Notice with the following actions to be completed by 11th July:
- Erect a secure perimeter fence around the entire site and regularly inspect and maintain this fence.
- Install CCTV which covers access and egress points with accompanying signage.
- Board every access point, including all broken windows and doors; on every level of the building to prevent trespass.
Unlike the previous warning, however, failing to comply with the new notice is a criminal offence.
Police say they will continue to engage with and support the Local Authority with their Section 215 action.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the Isle of Wight Council issued a Section 215 notice on Phoenix Commerical Property Development Limited earlier this year. It demanded 13 items needed to be corrected at the Esplanade site by 11th May, with a further 2 items by 11th July.
However, the company has appealed the notice which has stopped the clock. The matter went before Magistrates on 20th May but Phoenix failed to show. The case has now been put back to August.
Nothing will change.. The whole of Sandown has been an absolute bombsite for too long now.
I thought the company had gone bust, and lots of individuals own parts of it.when buying apartments, or deposit for the rooms on the site?
I see another fire coming. And yes I know there has already been a fire there.
Just make a call to “Arson R Us” it worked on the Gaiety Arcade in Ventnor. Oh hang on it wasn’t arson, but yes it was. Yes this Hotel needs to be tidied up, but I am sure a “strange” fire will take it down shortly.
A misleading headline the police can’t tell them to clean up the site. Yes, secure the site but in reality the fine for not doing so is far less than the cost to carry out the work. It’s good to see some action but there seems to be so many legal loop holes the legal framework to sort these problems out needs an overhaul.
And on and on it goes and nothing will change. Just like the ice rink in Ryde. What we need is a council that is fit for purpose and that has a pair…
They must be quaking in their boots!
If it’s a criminal offence then arrest the directors of the company.
It’s not just this hotel, the whole of Sandown seafront is a total embassment. How a main beach resort of the Island could be allowed to disintegrate into such a state, bewilders me. The council should be ashamed of themselves.
Our Councillors do not know the meaning of the word shame!only “bung”and nothing in getting this eyesore sorted out for them,so heads in the sand times! How can we have “seaside towns”with no bloody decent accommodations along the seafront?it’s a shambles and if Councillors are not willing to haul their arses off of their well padded seats ,perhaps it’s time the people of Sandown sorted out our own problems!
Hang on Phoenix appealed the notice to stop the clock, then failed to turn up that’s fishy, CLOCK SHOULD RE-START through forfeiture. yes Get local URBEX to call in put it out on you tube and hey we got a fire . may be it should be burnt to the ground with fire doing a protection cover dont fighyt the building fire just stop a further fire building destroyed phoenix instructed to clear up or go0 to jail once dune land to be used as a free car park .No buildings to be built on it for 50 years. Good by phoenix .
Sorry, but why has it been put on hold until August? Laughable!
