Emergency service personnel have closed part of Newport High Street this afternoon (Thursday).
A single fire appliance from Newport, as well as numerous officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, were called to the scene on High Street shortly after 15:15.
Firefighters have accessed an above-shop property using a ladder, making entrance through a window. There are no obvious signs of fire.
The road is currently blocked between British Heart Foundation and Hogshead.
As a result of the cordon the road is currently impassable. All traffic is diverting via Quay Street leading to traffic delays in the area as a result.
It is unclear as to the exact nature of the incident although detectives from Newport CID are present at the scene.
UPDATE @ 17:00 – The cordon in the area has been lifted. Crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have since stood down from the scene.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary – who have confirmed that they were called to a concern for welfare – remain at the scene.
They have stated that there is no wider risk to the public.

Could of kept one lane open, chaos down Sea street and then up onto dual,no one gives way to left and selfish drivers push those in left to go left and then onto Pan and either back on road KFC or through Pan Meadows by ASDA, whoever dreamt up changing lane layout to Coppins bridge!. Should of spent money making 3lanes across bridge maybe .
First world problem, get over it
Someone died, sorry you wers slightly inconvenienced
I can’t understand why it was necessary to close the road. Generally massive over reaction to all incidents.
Hopefully no-one overreacts when yuu need help
