A child threatening to jump from the railway bridge on Ryde Esplanade earlier this afternoon is now safe in the care of Police.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary deployed units to the Esplanade, near the bus station, at 16:17 in response to a concern for welfare report.
Officers arrived on scene to find a young boy on the bridge having climbed over the railings.
Thanks to the efforts of responding officers, he came down from the bridge at 17:10.
South Western Railway advised that due to a police incident near Ryde Esplanade, trains to and from the station were operating at reduced speeds. The Island Line service has since returned to normal.

So they didn’t turn off the power to the live rails, ya know, just in case?
Don’t know why you’ve got so many thumbs down on your comment. I totally agree power should have been turned off. They obviously didn’t take this situation seriously enough and thought child was just attention seeking. Too much mental health in adolescence is ignored or played down by the relevant authorities. I really hope this young boy gets the help he needs.
Maybe he wasn’t directly above the energised rail, maybe the block section was indeed isolated and trains could coast through. If there is any suggestion of someone coming into contact with the third rail or OLE, it is switched off and earthed. Trains can run under caution through the affected section.
Poor kid needed some help obviously
Lets hope he gets the support he needs.
Your heart breaks for the pain this poor child must of been feeling .
I blame the parents poor kid , massive thumbs up nipper stay safe
Bit unfair to blame the parents without knowing the facts. Could be that the child is being bullied and hasn’t told his parents. I’m sure if parents were unaware of their son’s mental state then they are probably blaming their selves anyway. Children are quite clever at hiding their emotions.
OMG! Whatever is going on in this young boys life needs sorting. To even think about jumping off that bridge is horrendous. Poor little chap. I hope he gets the help he so desperately needs.
