Officers investigating an incident that saw a 95-year-old woman burgled in Freshwater have released an image of a man they would like to speak to.
Sometime between midday and 13:00 on Sunday 1st August, the victim was at home on Copse Lane when a man unknown to her walked into her house uninvited. He then left the address with cash from her purse.
Officers have been following a number of lines of enquiry and now have this CCTV image that can be released to the public. Police are appealing to anyone who may recognise the man in the image.
If you saw him in the area at the time specified or know who he is, please call 101 quoting 44210305357 or go online and submit information via this link: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report
Officers would also like to remind the public of the following crime prevention advice:
- Always use the door chain when answering the door. If you are not sure do not open the door.
- Do not keep substantial sums of money in the home.
- Always keep front and back doors locked.
- Always check the credentials of unknown callers. Do not phone the number on the ID card, use a phone book or bill.
- Never employ cold-calling doorstep traders or engage with cold callers on the phone.
- LOCK STOP CHAIN and check – if unsure do not open the door.
- Report any suspicious callers or activity to the police immediately.
- Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends and family.
- Encourage residents to call 101 to advise of any unexpected callers – this gives Police a better chance at building a picture of where potential criminals are operating.
Always report any suspicious caller to your home to the police on 101. In an emergency, or if a crime is in progress, call 999.

that’s not going to take long to find him
What a dirty low life scum. I hope the elderly lady wasn’t harmed, although I bet she is mentally from then on.
I hope that stolen money brings him no good.
Absolutely disgusting it’s always the vulnerable old people that scum like him go for all because they have no way to defend themselves
Looks like utter pond life
Filthy scumbag how would he feel if that was his relative or him one day????
No one knows what is around the corner ..
Karma let’s hope he is caught ASAP …
And the Judge gives a sentence that fits the crime ,?.?.?.
Last time I phoned 101 about suspicious people knocking on my nan’s door they didn’t seem too interested. If only the IOW had its own control room.
When caught will have suffered from a traumatic childhood and end up with a suspended sentence and a £50 fine
Quite. Almost everyone feels that sentencing is far too lenient and no longer gives a deterrent to criminals. This permissive culture also feels like an insult to victims, who are made to feel that they don’t matter very much.
– What happened to the political promises to be ‘Tough on Crime’ ??
What a coward ! Great shot of his mug. Almost certain this is an islander. Certain I’ve seen it somewhere, but don’t know who he is. Someone will though.
One can only hope that mug shot looks somewhat different if a relation of the old lady finds him first, for it will be the ONLY punishment this filth ever receives.
Let’s hope the family or friends find him before the police do, so he gets real. Punishment
