An elderly convicted sex offender who was behind bars on the Isle of Wight after pleading guilty to more than 10 sex offences committed in the 70s and 80s, died of pneumonia.
Clive Collins, 79, died at HMP Isle of Wight on 8th March 2021 as a result of pneumonia, the Prisons & Probation Ombudsman has revealed.
The-then 76-year-old was found guilty of 11 counts of indecent assault and 2 charges of gross indecency involving young girls in the 1970s and 1980s.
A member of the prison population here on the Island since 2018, Collins had numerous health issues including atrial fibrillation and hypertension. He moved around the prison using a wheel walking aid.
On 4th March, Collins complained of feeling unwell and had not been able to go and collect his medications. His condition deteriorated the next day with the 79-year-old suffering from breathing issues.
After it was noted both his heart and breathing rate were low and his blood oxygen level was low, he was transferred to the intensive care unit on 6th March before he died 2 days later.
Mr Collins was the 13th prisoner to die at Isle of Wight since March 2019. 7 of the previous deaths were from natural causes and 5 were self-inflicted.
