Plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council to partially demolish the former Woolworths building in Ryde to build 5 houses, as well as forming 4 flats on the 2nd floor of the retail unit.
A planning application has been filed by Round Island Ltd. proposing to build 5x 3-bed, 3-storey houses in the car park off John Street, as well as developing 4x 1-bed flats on the top floor of the High Street premises currently occupied by M&Co.
The news comes ahead of the closure of the fashion brand, which entered administration late in 2022. Store closing signs have now been erected in the windows of M&Co suggesting the end is nigh.
Under the plans, the M&Co building – more commonly known as previously being Woolworths – will be retained as a retail unit on the ground floor, with retail space/storage on the 1st floor. It’s on the 2nd floor that the 1-bed flats will be developed.
Around the back in the staff car park, the rear section of the building will be completely demolished to allow enough room for the modern townhouses to be built – each boasting a garage and a parking space.
The application to partially demolish and change the use of the building was submitted just before Christmas, but plans have been building in the background since at least May.
Comments on the scheme can be submitted until 10th February.

Okay but what about parking places for the flats ?? Will be sad to see a car park gone in Ryde..
Sad, b stupid I would say. It’s so crazy that it is bound to be passed by our beloved and stupid council.
Surely you can ‘see’ what the bigger picture is? They want only the better people to own cars, hence the building over car parks, and not hurrying around to fit electric chargers for the masses to charge their cars.
The councillors, MP’s and rich, who all live in large detached properties, with drives and likely a garage with more floor space than you home, will all be set up fine to charge their cars.
Whilst they will persuade the plebs, under the guise of ‘the environment, climate change etc’ to wobble about on silly battery scooters or take public transport sat amongst se x pests, druggies, drunks and other nere do wells.
SEE what is being fed to subtly slowly brainwash the masses.
Your very angry but your point is. And it’s always been the same hasn’t it there have always been the rich and the better off it’s no different now
The end of the High Street is nigh. Less retail, more housing, this is the beginning of the end.
It’s coffee shops and upmarket charity shops all the way. Wouldn’t be surprised if Costa move to the larger premises there.
Peeps, its not a good project at all, you all saying about building over a car park, its private and only a mere service area.
my thought is it will not do the town anygood at all not to mention whilst all this work is going on, the parking bays in John St will no doubt be lost as the trucks will need to use them to go in and out of the site……dont say yes to this its only going to help the property owner and no-one else
I think it’s terrible. They should bring back Woolworths!
Reallly miss the demise of Woolworths – the reliable go to” shop.
