If you speak to cycling fans about previous Tour de France winners there are likely to be a number of names that crop up in conversation – Robbie McEwen, Peter Sagan and Erik Zabel will all be names that are likely to be mentioned time and time again. This year the Tour de France is being commentated on by Robbie McEwan, which when you consider the Australian’s track record at the event is no surprise. As you might imagine, he has plenty to say on the topic of competitive cycling. In fact, Betway Insider recently caught up with Robbie McEwen to discuss all things Tour de France.
Peter Sagan
If there is one name that is going to be discussed when talking about competitive cycling and the Tour de France, it is going to be Peter Sagan – 7 times green jersey winner and a cyclist that is competing in the 2022 Tour de France. With such impressive accolades to his name, it is no surprise that not only is he a name that comes up in conversation but he’s one that people no doubt look up to and would like to replicate in terms of career success.
It isn’t just the Tour de France that has seen Peter Sagan do well; he’s had success in over 130 international cycle races.
What Robbie McEwen Has to Say
One of the things that Robbie McEwen loves about the success of Sagan’s career is the publicity that it has bought to the world of competitive cycling, much like Sir Bradley Wiggins career. The Tour de France might well be an internationally renowned event, but it is generally quieter and less talked about than events such as World Cup Football or the Golf open. However, McEwen talks about Sagan’s success and how this helped to change things a little – “For years, people were watching cycling because of Peter Sagan. He’s just such an entertainer on the bike, his aggressive racing style; his go-forward attitude is just so spectacular.”
Will Anyone Beat Peter Sagan?
With an amazing 7-green jersey wins to his name; there are many people wondering who will be able to beat his record – or indeed if that is even possible. In his recent interview, Robbie McEwen talked about Wout van Aert and how well he is doing and that it is likely he could start dominating the wins in terms of future green jersey wins. However, that said not only does someone have to compete in the Tour de France 8 times to be in with a chance of beating Sagan’s record, but they need to win every time too! As McEwen says, this is something that isn’t going to be easy to achieve – “If he can go to the Tour with this sort of form eight years in a row, then he could be the man to win eight. It’s never simple. It is never a given. That record of seven could stand for another 100 years.”
So, who will be the person to beat Peter Sagan? The future remains to be seen, however, one thing for sure is that he’s a force to be reckoned with and his career achievements so far have been incredible.
