A 40-year-old man from Southampton remains in hospital after being hit by a motorcycle on a rural road between Whitwell and Ventnor during the early hours of yesterday morning (Sunday).
Police and paramedics were alerted to the crash involving a motorcycle and pedestrian on Whitwell Road, near to the rugby club, at 01:18.
Several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service responded to the scene and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled from its base at Thruxton.
Medics treated the pedestrian at the roadside before he was flown directly to the major trauma centre at Southampton, where he remains this morning.
It remains unclear at this time as to why the mainlander was walking along the unlit road during the early hours.
Crash appeal signs have been erected at the collision site asking for any witnesses to get in touch with Police on 101.

It’s also why there is no pavement
& was he wearing anything visible ?
And was he on the correct side of the road too?
So many pedestrians think they are a car driver, and walk along in the same direction of traffic on roads without pavements! Highway Code states that pedestrians should walk facing oncoming traffic in these situations.
Depends on the section of road
You want a pavement from Whitwell to Ventnor?
No I want them to ban pedestrians from the road. This space is for cars no people!
Obviously hope both are ok, but, was he jaywalking.
The concept of jaywalking was propaganda from Ford and GM. There is no such law in the UK.
i bet he got lost on his way back from the pub
For a second I wondered if it was the stupid school girl that walked out in front of me and other traffic without looking to impress her mates, she just laughed. Guess was another idiot, maybe her dad.
Asking for trouble walking in the middle of the night on a country road!! Mind you, buses and taxis are non-existent at night here…
Guess the Motorcycle rider was sober and had its high beam on.. and doing no more than 40 mph… but how did the rider not see a person walking.. did the biker have any damage, did he ride off…
And I hope your friend heals physically and mentally and does not read the ignorant stupid thoughtless comments so embarrassing. I hope the rider is OK as well . A shock for all concerned thankfully no one died.
