PICTURE GALLERY: Thousands of people turned out for one of the Island’s most memorable ever sporting occasions yesterday (Thursday) as Ryde Town Centre was transformed into an incredible 1.3km cycling circuit for the day.
Community races involving amateur racers and professional team time trials took place throughout the afternoon before the spectacular, main event – The Pearl Izumi Tour Series at 19:30.
The day got off to a bad start with heavy downpours and surface flooding, which resulted in the cancellation of the school’s supporting activities on the Esplanade start/finish line. As the afternoon progressed the skies cleared in time for the Team Time Trial and later the business race.
Paul Herbert, Service Director, Island Roads said:
“We are delighted to have played a major role in bringing such a prestigious event to the Island. As our roads are improved through the highways PFI, it would be nice to think that the Island could host even more top quality cycling events in the future.”
David Thornton, CEO, Visit Isle of Wight, said:
“Visit Isle of Wight is extremely proud to bring this event to the Island. A huge audience of visitors and local residents turned out to give ‘Bicycle Island’ a tremendous start to the season – well done to everyone involved.”
The event will be broadcast on ITV4 at 20:00 today (Friday).
