Letter to the editor – 18th June 2023
“Yesterday afternoon (17th June), Mitten Road, Bembridge was turned into a chaotic car park with residents vying for spaces alongside visiting Bowls club members.
“The Bembridge Bowling Club, which is situated at the top end of Mitten Road was hosting a 6-rink league game involving 48 players, some from Cowes and some from Sandown.
Article continues below this advertisement “Last Thursday an agreement was made through the parish council, and with the scoutmaster that yesterday was an agreed day for the scouts field to be used for car parking at the Bowls club, but unfortunately the scoutmaster had a new padlock fitted, which was numerically controlled, but failed to provide the Bowling Club committee with the numbers to access the field, therefore up to 48 people were looking for car parking spaces in and around Mitten Road.
“Local residents were being pushed out of their normal parking spaces and one of them took it upon themselves to paint messages on car windows!
“This caused outrage for those involved as it was seen as a violation of their property. At one point, the police were going to be called in, but the person concerned could not be located.”

Sadly the Bembridge residents think they have a god given right to the parking there. I went to watch a bowls match there and came under their scrutiny. Horrible rude people. Never been back, so I guess they won!

Stupid selfish bowls club members must have travelled one to each car, if there were 48 vying for spaces. Did it not occur to them to car-share?
Make sure if it winds up Bembridge people up , we will use separate cars , what a load of snobs , no yellow lines you can by Law park there

But the scoutmaster is the one at fault for not opening the gate as agreed. So the parking wouldn’t have been a problem if the field was opened

Back in the old days an Unsafe establishment like this would not have been allowed to trade.
Vehicles driving into this too small business tail back up the road past Staddlestones
Many vehicles then overtake cars waiting and cause a risk to oncoming traffic.
Where is the Law on the Island.
I would have McDonalds closed down until they fine a much bigger site where it is safe for
everyone.
Is it a private road.
If not ,then hard luck because you don’t own the public road outside your house.
Yes it is a private road. The way the cars were parked on this particular day was selfish to residents. An emergency vehicle would not have been able to get through.
It is not a private road. It is a public highway without any parking restrictions whatsoever. It is therefore the responsibility of each individual driver to park correctly and responsibly as is the case anywhere. The bowling club has been there for a hundred years, how long have the residents lived there, or had their holiday homes there ? It is not down to the bowling club to police the parking. If this were the case every shop etc. would need to regulate the cars outside their premises !
The land the bowling club and the scouts hut occupy is administered as a Charity. The trustees being Bembridge Parish Council. (see Jerimiah Goodall Charity on the Charity Commission page.) The Charity was set up in 1939 and the bowling club have an agreement to use the site subject to stipulations. Again you are wrong the road is NOT a public highway it is a private road. Consideration from those using the Bowls Club is all residents are asking to allow access to homes and emergency vehicles.
I understand that this is a private road and, unusually, each house owns a small section of road. I could be wrong but that’s what I was told about Heathfield Rd.

The Scouts field was given in perpetuity for use of such.
It is only by kindly agreement that the arrogant and selfish bowls players have gained permission to use the Scouts field for parking.
The scruffy little road leading to such is supposed to be maintained by the home owners but clearly their money is spent elsewhere
Yet the ‘real reason why the Echo received ‘the letter’ was because sad bitter and perhaps mentally Ill ex-councillor(s) ‘use’ any tiny chance to attempt to discredit the Parish Council, clearly regretting leaving or being removed from their tiny seat of ‘power’
All wealthy, retired too early bored with partners and need to vent frustrations on all others.
I blame the WEF. Seems the most likely cause. Global business moguls and world leaders love a bit of vehicular chaos. They get off on it.
So many persons have no idea who the W.E.F is,
soon they will find out.
They will own nothing and be happy.
It’s happening now, high inflation and high mortgage rates.
