Parents are continuing to raise concerns about a road crossing in Ryde more than 18 months after contacting their local Councillor.
Following a number of near misses on the pelican crossing outside Oakfield Primary School on Easthill Road/Appley Road, parents raised concerns about an ‘accident waiting to happen’ with a number of drivers failing to see the red light or simply ignoring the traffic lights, putting parents and children in danger. The lights are in dark shade under overgrown trees.
Over a year and a half ago, the Council said they needed to prioritise safety improvements across the Island to areas where 4 or more incidents which have resulted in a death or serious injury over the previous 3 years have occurred. Thankfully, this hasn’t happened outside the busy school – formally known as Bishop Lovett – but those who use the crossing fear it is just a matter of time.
The near misses have continued to occur despite illuminated signs being erected in the area to warn drivers during the periods at the beginning and end of the school day.
Now, parents are calling for more to be done to improve safety at the site.
