Firefighters from Ryde and Sandown are tackling a fire within the battery at Puckpool Park in Ryde this evening (Tuesday).
2 hose reels and breathing apparatus are being used to extinguish the fire within the historic concrete structure.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident at around 20:00.
Island Echo understands that pallets and rubbish within a tunnel network have been set on fire.
It is not clear at this stage how the fire started, however, there is suspicion it may have been started deliberately.
Positive pressure ventilation is now being used to rid lingering smoke.

The weather probably started because the sun got fed up of looking down on the island.
Four and a half more weeks before they try, in vain, to educate the Pork then the fires should subside, excluding Sandown hotels of course.
Still, long as they know how to sign on, tis all that matters now to score a free home, free feral clones all paid for, so why bother to learn in their charity kept eyes?

The brainless kids who do this sort of thing for a ‘laugh’ will be watching and thinking this is ok. This is not ok and not normal.

Blame kids easy target as always but maybe look at there is sod all for them to do here !not saying arson is acceptable atall but nobody actually knows how it was started and the blame game gets going .

Beaches, countryside, downs, all the towns on the island to look around, leisure centres, clubs, just join in instead of moaning. Do you think it’s worse off the island? I’ve lived in London and there’s less to do their for youngsters, just be glad to live in a nice place, the grass isn’t greener!

Recall there has been a lot of work carried on the beach chalets recently; would be surprised if rubbish left by tradesman.

We have dedicated hard working emergency services, it’s morons up above that cut the services and left them without the personnel and the resources they/we need! Blame the morons not the ones that are still trying to help us all! Xx

If any one did set fire to anything find out who did it and sort them out! Should have cctv in there anyway as a lot more goes on in that park I’d imagine at night. It’s true, there’s plenty to do here in a nicer setting than most but it’s a fact a lot of people don’t appreciate it and don’t know how lucky they actually are. Also not clever enough either
