A charity football match held in memory of 2 much-loved individuals has raised over £1,500 for 2 Isle of Wight charities.
Sandown & Lake FC, alongside McCarthy’s, took on the Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service in a special charity football match in support of Mountbatten Hospice and The Wight Brainy Bunch. It was Sandown & Lake/McCarthy’s who emerged victorious with a 2-1 win on the day.
Following the match, the event continued at McCarthy’s Restaurant & Bar where over 100 raffle prizes were up for grabs, alongside stalls, games, pony rides and a bouncy castle – all contributing to a fabulous afternoon of fundraising.
A grand total of £1,531 was raised, which will be split equally between the two charities.
Jacqui Middlemiss, Secretary of Sandown & Lake FC, said:
“Today has been an amazing achievement, especially as the match was in memory of my mum Elizabeth Stephens, who sadly passed away in February, and Jan Mills, a lovely man who also lost his fight earlier this year and was a resident at Fairway Holiday Park.”
Jacqui has paid tribute to the many local businesses who contributed raffle prizes, as well as Louise and Aaron Baker of McCarthy’s, whose ongoing sponsorship and support have become an integral part of the club’s fundraising efforts.
Thanks were also extended to Jimmy Golding and Steve Chapman for organising the teams, referee Chris Sinatra, and the players who gave it their all despite the scorching heat.
The biggest thanks, however, were reserved for Jacqui’s fundraising partner Laura Murthwaite, without whom “none of this would even be possible”.
A cheque presentation evening is scheduled to take place on 29th August at 19:00.
