Over £10,000 has been raised to help support the family of 51-year-old Mattias Klabis, a scooter rider from Germany who tragically died in a road traffic collision at Apse Heath last week.
Mattias, from Hamburg, had arrived on the Isle of Wight for the annual Bank Holiday scooter rally. However, as he was travelling along Newport Road in Apse Heath last Thursday he was involved in a collision with a Citroen C3.
Sadly, Mattias’ life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene – just 200 metres from the scooter rally campsite at Sandown Airport.
A 36-year-old woman from Ventnor was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has been released pending further investigations.
Now, the scooter community has rallied together to raise funds for the Klabis family at this difficult time. This has included £1,600 raised from a whipround at the campsite, with a further £8,800 raised on a Paypal fundraiser.
Mattias has been described as a fantastic engineer and welder with a sharp humour and a vision for taking his scooters to an other level. He leaves behind a wife and 2 sons.
