Firefighters have extinguished a hedge fire and saved a wooden outbuilding from going up in flames after an out of control bonfire took hold in Totland earlier this afternoon (Easter Monday).
1 fire appliance and a water carrier from Freshwater were called to a garden in Totland after a domestic bonfire quickly grew out of control and spread to a nearby hedgerow.
Although the homeowner had laid out a hose just in case, the strong breeze meant that the fire spread too quickly to be controlled prompting a 999 call to the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
2 main jets were used by the retained firefighters to extinguish the fire, saving a wooden outbuilding from serious damage. The building has sustained some superficial exterior scorching.
It’s been a busy way for the Freshwater crew having dealt with a small fire in the open in Totland late this morning, as previously reported by Island Echo.

Not surprising as it has become almost impossible to take garden waste to the tip!
So, that makes it ok to start an out of control fire then…
It became an out of control fire. It did not start as one…
I don’t care how sensible the homeowner had been – bonfires are socially unacceptable. Total disregard to others who might want to enjoy their own gardens without choking on somebody else’s smoke.
There is 34 and a half million vehicles in Britain polluting the air. I am sure the odd bonfire rather pales into insignificance. And unless you stand at your neighbours fence gulping in large mouthfuls of smoke on the couple of evenings “most” fires are lit a year again I am sure you will not be to terribly put out. Mind snowflakes will melt I guess….
Nothing like deciding to have a bonfire when theres a strong breeze going!
Open tip up as before then.booking it is rubbish if you cant be flexible and turn up when you want.no need now.just council rules gone mad….again
It’s not hard to book a trip. Really easy in fact and the tip is not as crowded when you get there as well.
As soon as the fine weather arrives the bonfire fanatics are at it !
Best advert for getting a Council garden waste bin, no having to go to the tip and it gets collected every 2 weeks.
I used to be a werewolf but I’m alright noowwwWWWWWW.
Got to be some old dodderer.
