Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team have been alerted to the discovery of a piece of suspected ordnance at Yaverland this afternoon (Thursday).
2 members of the public alerted HM Coastguard to the find near Red Cliff at around 15:30.
Coastguard Rescue Officers have investigated the object and have sent photographs to Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts on the mainland for assessment.
If the object is feared to be a viable device then a Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth will be mobilised to the Island.
UPDATE – The incident has now been handed over to the Police.
