UPDATED: A blaze that ripped through the heart of the Island Learning Centre in Lake during the early hours of this morning (Friday) is being treated as arson.
Following a joint investigation involving Police and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, it has been deemed that the fire was started deliberately, prompting an appeal for information to be launched.
It is believed the suspected arsonist(s) set fire to a mini-bus located beside the school building, which soon spread throughout bringing total destruction to the former Broadlea Primary School site.
Two specialist fire investigation dogs from Hampshire, who are able to detect ignitable substances, have been to the charred remains of the building today.
DI John Stirling, who is leading the investigation said:
“We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the fire, or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, between 23:30 last night (July 16) and 00:15 this morning (July 16).”
Police have this morning been carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the local area.
UPDATE @ 17:15 – It has been confirmed that The Island Learning Centre building will be demolished.
The Isle of Wight Council has secured the site with heras fencing set up and 24 hour security patrols until further notice. Access to the school grounds, which is considered dangerous, is strictly prohibited.
A total of 37 staff are affected by the fire and have been briefed on the ongoing situation. The school currently has 62 pupils on register, who will be updated as information becomes available throughout the coming days and weeks at www.islandlearning.co.uk.

It is hoped a temporary school site will be arranged for the new term starting 3rd September. This location is yet to be agreed.
Headteacher at the Island Learning Centre Tom Pegler, who visited the remains of his school this morning (pictured right), said:
“I would like to say a huge thank you to the emergency services, parents, carers, pupils and the local community – and it is our intention to fully support the children and staff through this period and have our school up and running again for 3 September.”
Executive member with responsibility for the fire and rescue service, Councillor Phil Jordan, said:
“Our emergency services on the Island have once again responded magnificently to a significant incident, and I would like to place on record our deep gratitude for their commitment and professionalism throughout last night’s events.”
UPDATE SATURDAY: A 16-year-old boy has been arrested by Police on suspicion of arson following yesterday’s fire.
The teenager has been questioned by detectives investigating the attack and has been bailed to reappear at Newport Police Station on 16th October pending further enquiries.
Due to his age, the 16-year-old cannot be named.
