UPDATED: The driver of a Mercedes Benz that smashed into a taxi before careering through a fence and into a balcony has died, Police have revealed.
As Island Echo reported first on Thursday lunchtime, the blue Mercedes E200 was involved in a serious RTC with a silver Peugeot taxi at Kite Hill with the junction of Firestone Copse Road.
Initial reports from St Mary’s Hospital to Island Echo indicated that two persons, a 92-year-old woman and a 45-year-old male, were taken to hospital and later discharged, however officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit have today confirmed the fatality of a 87-year-old man, who was driving the luxury car, on Friday morning
It was suspected by Island Echo’s roving reporters that the incident was being treated as life-threatening due to the arrival of the Collision Investigation Unit at the scene later on Thursday afternoon.
Rescue 104 helicopter was seeing leaving Seaclose Park, Newport carrying out a patient medivac at the same time, however it is unknown if this was related to this incident.
Witnesses to the incident are now being sought. Anyone with information can contact Sgt Dave Sanderson at Shanklin Police Station by phoning 101. Information can be given anonymously by phoning the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
