Needles Coastguard Rescue Team has welcomed a brand-new, multi-use electric vehicle to its fleet, in what is a first for the Island’s coastguard teams.
The addition of a van is said to be a ‘major’ step forward in enhancing operational capabilities on the Isle of Wight, whilst reinforcing HM Coastguard’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The 9-seater Toyota Proace Verso was chosen for its versatility, with removable bench seats the vehicle can be adapted for various operational needs including transporting additional rescue equipment, serving as a crew transport vehicle, or acting as a mobile command base for incidents.
Fully equipped with HM Coastguard livery, it also features the typical blue emergency light bar and siren, ensuring it remains highly visible and ready for response.
To date, the Isle of Wight has managed without such a vehicle. And it remains to be seen how the limited battery life of an electric vehicle works in the reality.
Needles CRT is retaining its Mitishbishi L200 4×4 – made possible thanks to its new Coastguard Station at Golden Hill which boasts an additional parking bay.
